We support open science principles, but also recognize that it is often challenging to ensure participant privacy while also making data broadly available to the academic research community. We had to balance these considerations with the privacy of the participants and protection of their health data. Furthermore, although the data could be de-identified, some of the data streams could not be fully anonymized. We recognize that this is a limitation, but we felt that we needed to give the participants strong reassurance that their data would not be used for any other purpose than for the research at hand.
