Data availability Most data used in this study are publicly available. For ease curated data (harmonised SNPs and MR results) are available at the authors GitHub (https://github.com/gushamilton/il6-sepsis) so all findings can be replicated. Raw data from the FinnGen GWAS are available via the FinnGen website (https://www.finngen.fi/) COVID-HGI GWAS are available via the COVID-HGI website (https://www.covid19hg.org/) and the UK Biobank GWAS performed as part of this study are available at the MRC-IEU Open GWAS repository (https://gwas.mrcieu.ac.uk/). Access to the full summary statistics for the sepsis GWAS performed by the GaINS and GenOSept committee is by application to the relevant committee.
