Abstract
Background As of the end of July, 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak exhibited its highest peak on July 28. Nevertheless, no remarkable excess mortality attributable to COVID-19 has been observed.
Object We sought to quantify excess mortality in April using the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) model.
Method We applied the NIID model to deaths of all causes from 1987 up through September, 2020 for the whole of Japan and up through July for Tokyo.
Results Results show very few excess mortality in August, 2020, when the following month of the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak. Conversely, in Tokyo, no excess mortality was detected until July.
Discussion and Conclusion This is the first time to detect excess mortality since the outbreak of COVID-19 had emerged in Japan. It might be important to continue to monitor excess mortality of COVID-19 carefully after September 2020.
