ABSTRACT
Countries adopted different plans regarding schools when lifting lockdown. Through a stochastic age-structured transmission model calibrated to the observed epidemic in Île-de-France, we explore scenarios of partial, progressive, or full school reopening. Given uncertainty on children’s role, we find that reopening schools after lockdown may increase COVID-19 cases, yet protocols exist that maintain the epidemic controlled. With pre-schools and primary schools in session starting May 11, ICU occupation would reach at most 72% [62,80]% of capacity if no other school level reopens, or if middle and high schools reopen in June. Immediately reopening all schools may overwhelm ICUs. Priority should be given to pre- and primary schools, whereas full attendance in middle and high schools is not recommended. Large-scale trace and testing are required to maintain the epidemic under control. Ex-post assessment shows that progressive school reopening, limited attendance, and strong adoption of preventive measures contributed to a decreasing epidemic.
