YR 2020 UL http://medrxiv.org/content/early/2020/08/17/2020.08.15.20175588.abstract AB Accurate models are fundamental to understand the dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic and to evaluate different mitigation strategies. Here, we present a multi-compartmental model that fits the epidemiological data for eleven countries, despite the reduced number of fitting parameters. This model consistently explains the data for the daily infected, recovered, and dead over the first six months of the pandemic. The good quality of the fits makes it possible to explore different scenarios and evaluate the impact of both individual and collective behaviors and government-level decisions to mitigate the epidemic. We identify robust alternatives to lockdown, such as self-protection measures, and massive testing. Furthermore, communication and risk perception are fundamental to modulate the success of different strategies. The fitting/simulation tool is publicly available for use and test of other models, allowing for comparisons between different underlying assumptions, mitigation measures, and policy recommendations.Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest.Funding StatementFCT - Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia, UID/CTM/04540/2019 to P.J.S., DSAIPA/AI/0087/2018 to J.G.S, Ph.D. scholarship PD/BD/142858/2018 to M.J.B. and FCT- CeFEMA project UID/CTM/04540/2018, EU-FCT Grant M-ERA-NET2/0006/2016 (CellColor) and EPSRC (project EP/M015726/1) for A.K.Author DeclarationsI confirm all relevant ethical guidelines have been followed, and any necessary IRB and/or ethics committee approvals have been obtained.YesThe details of the IRB/oversight body that provided approval or exemption for the research described are given below:NoneAll necessary patient/participant consent has been obtained and the appropriate institutional forms have been archived.YesI understand that all clinical trials and any other prospective interventional studies must be registered with an ICMJE-approved registry, such as ClinicalTrials.gov.
