TI - Viral infectivity in pediatric SARS-CoV-2 clinical samples does not vary by age AID - 10.1101/2022.10.17.22281193 DP - 2022 Jan 01 TA - medRxiv PG - 2022.10.17.22281193 4099 - http://medrxiv.org/content/early/2022/10/18/2022.10.17.22281193.short 4100 - http://medrxiv.org/content/early/2022/10/18/2022.10.17.22281193.full AB - During the early months of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, notable uncertainty emerged regarding the role of children in transmission dynamics 1. With time, it became more clear that children were susceptible to infection with SARS-CoV-2, but that the vast majority of children experienced mild symptoms with lower incidence of severe disease 2. This pattern remained consistent despite the later emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants, including Delta and Omicron, even among children <5 ineligible for vaccination3. The relative lack of severe disease in the pediatric population raised questions regarding viral kinetics and infectivity in children versus adults.Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest.Funding StatementThis study was supported by funding from NIH P30GM118228-04.Author DeclarationsI confirm all relevant ethical guidelines have been followed, and any necessary IRB and/or ethics committee approvals have been obtained.YesThe details of the IRB/oversight body that provided approval or exemption for the research described are given below:The University of Vermont's Institutional Review Board and the Children's Wisconsin Institutional Review Board waived ethical approval of this work.I confirm that all necessary patient/participant consent has been obtained and the appropriate institutional forms have been archived, and that any patient/participant/sample identifiers included were not known to anyone (e.g., hospital staff, patients or participants themselves) outside the research group so cannot be used to identify individuals.YesI understand that all clinical trials and any other prospective interventional studies must be registered with an ICMJE-approved registry, such as ClinicalTrials.gov.
